This skill set component of the Advanced Diploma qualification is designed to reflect the role of building surveyors or certifiers who most commonly work for councils or private companies assessing plans, carrying out inspections and issuing approvals to build and occupy residential buildings up to three storeys.
The building surveyor has been defined by the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (2011) as “Those responsible for making sure buildings are safe, energy efficient, accessible and meet all legal requirements. They evaluate and assess plans, conduct inspections and issue building permits for example, occupancy permits.“

The Skill Set CPCSS00004- Provide Building Surveying Services for Residential Buildings up to Three Storeys is nationally recognised.
- The Skill Set as offered by the College of Professional Development (CPD Training) is recognised by the: NSW Building Professionals Board accreditation scheme as one of the required qualifications for A 3 and A 4 Building Certifier. Further information about what is required for accreditation in NSW can be found on the BPB website.
- Western Australian Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.
Those wishing to be accredited as a Building Surveying Technician by AIBS will need to complete the Skill Set CPCSS00004- Provide Building Surveying Services for Residential Buildings up to Three Storeys plus the following two units of competency from the Advanced Diploma:
- CPCCBS6003 Apply legal and ethical requirements to building surveying functions.
- CPCCBS6016 Assess and advise on performance-based solutions for buildings up to three storeys Please refer to the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors Accreditation scheme.
Program structure
The Skill Set is offered as 7 modules that cover the mandatory 7 units from the Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying in the CPC- Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package. Across the program you cover legislation, underpinning theory and practical building surveying skills for class 1 and 10 residential buildings.
Both CPCCBS6003 Apply legal and ethical requirements to building surveying functions, and CPCCBS6016 Assess and advise on performance-based solutions for buildings up to three storeys are also offered to those wishing to apply for accreditation as a Building Surveying Technician with the AIBS.
Timeframe
The course is delivered on-line, and is self-paced, which means that you can progress as fast as slow you like. How long the course takes will depend on your level of knowledge and the time that you will able to commit.
It generally takes most approximately 18 months to 2 years to complete the Skill Set, however we do allow of 3 years from enrolment if needed Enrolments are open all year round, and the process can be completed via this website. Simply click on the “Dates and Registration” tab on this page of the website to enrol.
You will need to provide a Unique Student Identifier number. If you don’t have one, they can be easily created on the Australian Government USI website.
Prerequisites
There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

The total course fees for the CPCSS00004 – Skill Set for Residential Buildings is $9,950.00 (GST not applicable).
This amount can be paid in instalments of $1500.
- First instalment of $1500 on enrolment - Registration and payment may be made online
- 5 instalments of $1500 taken periodically as the student progresses through the course according to the payment plan
- A final payment of $995.00 prior to completing the course
